What changes when the method changes?
Material is never neutral. Each medium changes what an artist can ask of us.
Photography
The camera did not simply record modern life. These artists changed what a photograph could claim to be.
Sculpture
Sculpture stopped being a statue on a plinth. It became body, architecture, material, gravity and the space around us.
Performance
When the artwork becomes an action, the body can be material, clock, risk, witness and social contract.
Video
Moving images left cinema and entered the gallery, where time, screens, bodies and spectators could be rearranged.
Conceptual Art
The idea did not replace the object so much as expose the rules behind objects, language, authorship and institutions.
